Why I Didn't Wait for Fashion School to Start Designing

For many aspiring designers, fashion school is often seen as the only path into the industry. It offers structure, technical training and valuable industry connections. Yet for many others, that path isn't immediately accessible. Financial limitations, family responsibilities or simply life's circumstances can delay the opportunity to study formally.

I realised early on that waiting for the "perfect time" could easily become an excuse to never begin. While I still value fashion education and hope to continue learning throughout my career, I didn't believe my creativity had to remain on hold until I could afford a classroom. Instead, I chose to start with what I already had: curiosity, determination and a willingness to learn.

Self-education became my classroom. I spent time studying the work of established designers, reading about garment construction, exploring different fabrics and learning from online resources that were freely available. Every sketch, every observation and every small experiment became part of the learning process. Progress wasn't always quick, but each step built confidence and deepened my understanding of design.

Looking back, I don't believe creativity waits for permission. Fashion school can provide an incredible foundation, but it isn't the only place where learning happens. Growth also comes through consistency, curiosity and the courage to begin before everything feels perfectly in place.

If you're passionate about fashion but unable to pursue formal education right now, don't underestimate the value of starting where you are. Learn continuously, remain open to feedback and embrace every opportunity to improve your craft. Your journey may look different from someone else's, but that doesn't make it any less meaningful.

Every designer begins somewhere. Sometimes the most important step isn't enrolling in a course—it's deciding to start.
